Digital Thumbs Up
The safe and reliable way to engage with plant and machine operators
At Safety Shield, fostering a culture of site safety has always been our number one priority. As we continue to research and develop new technology, keeping construction workers safe is always at the forefront of our minds.
Through collaborative research and design, Safety Shield in partnership with Lynch Plant Hire have built upon the established, industry-known safety procedure ‘Thumbs Up’ and digitalised it. The thumbs up procedure enabling a site user the ability to safely communicate with the machine operator is widely adopted across the construction industry. When a site user wants to approach the machine, they give a thumbs up gesture from a safe distance to the operator.
Once the operator has seen the thumbs up signal, they will bring this machine to a controlled stop. By pressing the in-cab Digital ‘Thumbs Up’ button the machine will then be disabled and the exterior LED sign will change from a red no entry sign to a green thumbs up sign with an audible external acceptance message. This then allows the site personnel a safe way to approach the machine without any doubt they have been seen.
adding an extra layer of safety with digital thumbs up
The thumbs up procedure is widely adopted across the construction industry and gives personnel the ability to safely communicate with the machine operator. When someone wants to approach the machine, they give a thumbs up gesture from a safe distance to the operator. Once the operator has seen the thumbs up signal, they will bring this machine to a controlled stop.
The technology will also inform personnel where to approach safely, with the LED shield highlighting the area of direct vision for the operator. Our ultimate goal with this new safety feature is to reduce the fatal risk of people plant interface entirely, creating injury-free worksites where everyone goes home safely, every day.
